The main ingredient used in a ketamine infusion therapy in Gainesville is a medication called ketamine, which was discovered in the 1960s. It was widely used as a safe but quick-acting surgical anesthesia during the Vietnam War. Ketamine was introduced into the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines in 2015 as an injectable anesthetic medicine.
However, recently, a published study in The American Journal of Psychiatry showed that weekly ketamine infusions were beneficial to people diagnosed with severe depression. Experts learned that ketamine was quite effective in reducing the symptoms of depression for patients who were already resistant to other treatments.
The study’s participants reported improvements in their depression symptoms by at least 50% after receiving six ketamine infusions in one week. Thus, ketamine has been touted as an innovative treatment for depression.
