Suboxone is an FDA-approved medication recommended to treat opioid dependence. It is a controlled substance and it has been classified as a Schedule 3 (III) prescription drug. That means it has been accepted for medical use but, because it may cause physical or psychological dependence and may be abused, the use of the drug must be regulated.
Under the Drug Addiction Treatment Act (DATA) codified at 21 U.S.C (Controlled Substance Act, §823(g), prescription use of Suboxone in the treatment of opioid dependence is limited to physicians who meet certain qualifying requirements.
