Foot bursitis is a condition that makes an area around a joint or bone painful, red, and swollen. It can affect both children and adults. Along with the pain, it can also contribute to mobility issues.
It is caused by inflammation of fluid-filled sacs called bursae. Typically, these sacs are cushions to nearby joints between the bones, tendons, or muscles. There are 33 joints in the foot so bursitis can occur in many different places. Commonly, it affects the ball of the foot, the fifth metatarsal (little toe), and the back of the heel.
