Marijuana addiction can mimic other substance use disorders. Use becomes daily to manage feelings of stress and anxiety.
Often other psychiatric illnesses are a factor, as is the use of other substances. By focusing on the underlying mental health conditions, patients can find freedom from their marijuana use.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 1 in 10 people who smoke marijuana become addicted. If they start before the age of 18, the statistic increases to 1 in 6.
A major factor in addiction is the amount of THC in marijuana has been steadily increasing over the years. Though there has been little research into the correlation between high THC levels and addiction, we know it affects the brain.
