What is microdiscectomy?

Microdiscectomy is a surgical procedure performed to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves by removing part of a herniated or ruptured disc. It aims to alleviate symptoms such as leg pain, numbness, or weakness caused by the compression of spinal nerves due to disc herniation.

This minimally invasive surgery is commonly used to treat conditions such as lumbar disc herniation, where the soft inner material of a spinal disc leaks out and irritates or compresses nearby nerves.

Microdecompression becomes a recommended course of action when conservative treatments, such as physical therapy and medication, fail to provide relief. Individuals experiencing persistent pain, weakness, or numbness due to disc herniation are often candidates for microdiscectomy.

Microdecompression may also be recommended for patients with other spin conditions, like sciatica and spinal stenosis.

Before recommending microdecompression, a healthcare provider typically confirms the need for surgery through diagnostic imaging, such as MRI or CT scans.
