Latest update from: Brooksville Dietitian - Are these 3 popular conceptions about losing weight true or false?

1. Losing weight is a marathon, not a sprint - TRUE!

If you’ve ever tried losing weight before, you know it’s not about quick results. If you want sustainable change, you need to take it nice and easy. In fact, the more you push yourself to get there faster by eating less and less, and exercising more and more, the more likely you are to just give up or worse - end up gaining ever more weight than before! Why? According to our Brooksville Dietitian, many people don’t realize this, but you are only able to achieve your weight loss goals and keep your new look permanently, is the lifestyle change. Unfortunately, most of us want immediate gratification, so we push ourselves to the limits and are super demotivated when we don’t see satisfying results. You have to change your mindset in order to change your life. Stop thinking about your diet as a temporary thing. Instead, make your new way of eating exciting and fun, and most importantly - maintainable. Only then you can start seeing those numbers on the scale drop!

2. Losing weight is about restricting your calorie intake - FALSE!

The model of calorie intake in false, or at least - incomplete. We were led to believe that the less calories we take in, the more weight we lose. Wrong! Have you ever heard the term ‘metabolic damage’? That’s what makes people gain more weight after they stop dieting. If you restrict your calorie intake, your metabolism slows down, because it doesn’t need to process as much as before. BUT as soon as you give up your restrictive diet and go back to your old ways of eating (and don’t fool yourself, you won’t be able to maintain this draconian lifestyle forever), your metabolism doesn’t immediately follow. It means that it isn’t able to process all calories you bring into the system, so it turns it into fat.

Our Brooksville Dietitian recommends - don’t restrict your calories, just be smart about your food choices. You can eat just as much (if not more!) as long as you eat healthy. Include more veggies, throw out salty snacks and sugary drinks, and you will be good.

3. Losing weight is all about sacrifice  - FALSE!

Even the word ‘sacrifice’ makes you cringe, doesn’t it? Well, don’t beat yourself up too much - we are all programmed to think like this. Our brains are simply not built to sacrifice! And the more you give up, the more you restrict, the more prone to failure you become. It’s just how it works! That’s why restrictive diets are not effective - a human brain is just not equipped to deal with all the limits and barriers! According to our Brooksville Dietitian, losing weight is all about shifting your mindset. If you keep treating a healthy lifestyle as a sacrifice, a way to restrict yourself and sacrifice things, you will not succeed. So make everything in your power to make your new lifestyle as enjoyable as possible. There are so many beautiful healthy recipes out there! You would never look at pizza the same way if you give them a try. On the other hand, if you really can’t live without pizza, cut yourself some slack! You can still enjoy life and lose weight, as long as you’re being smart about it.
