What is Scar Revision?
Plastic surgeon for scars in Miami – We are all familiar with how scars can occur – whether it be through a work related accident, an auto accident, a skin condition such as acne, an auto accident, or a simple bit of bad luck. However, what some people are perhaps less familiar with is how to remove – or reduce the visibility of – these scars. In the medical world this is known as ‘scar revision’. This is all the more important if the scar is in a very visible location, such as your face. Such prominent scars can sometimes lead to psychological issues. But what types of scar revision are there? In other words, what are the ways to remove scars?
What are the ways to remove scars?
When it comes to scar revision, there are several option. The type of scar and location of the scar are two of the factors which help to determine which option is the most suitable one for your specific scar. These options are as follows:
This is a mechanical polishing of the skin.
This procedure changes the surface of the skin to allow new, healthy skin to form at the scar site.
Chemical Peel Solutions
These chemical solutions penetrate skin skin’s surface to soften irregularities in texture and color.
This procedure is the surgical removal of the scar. Closure of the resulting surface would is known as a “simple” closure. Layered closure is used where the excision extends to tissue below the skin surface or in areas with a high degree of movement. This first step, or layer, requires a sub-dermal closure (below the skin surface) with absorbable or non-removable sutures. Layers of closure continue to build, concluding with closure of the remaining surface wound.
Where can scar revision surgery be performed?
Scar revision surgery may be performed in your plastic surgeon’s office using local anesthesia. If your scarring is more significant and and sedation or general anesthesia is also necessary for you to be comfortable during the procedure, it may be performed in an accredited office-based surgical facility, licensed ambulatory surgical center, or a hospital. If you do require sedation or general anesthesia, you will need another adult to drive you home and stay with you for the first night following the procedure.
