A ganglion is a pocket of fluid, also referred to as cyst, that can form when a synovial fluid (which helps joints move slowly) leaks out of the joint or tendon sheath. Those fluid pockets – ganglions – usually appear on the wrist or the tips of the backs of the fingers. In many cases, they naturally disappear after some time. However, when they become painful and/or make is difficult to move your hand, a surgery is performed to drain the fluid or remove the ganglions.
Due to rheumatoid arthritis, a knuckle can be damaged or deformed. As a result it causes the fingers ‘drift’ sideways from the thumb. It not only is painful but also reduces the functionality of the hand and wrist. When that occurs, the doctor performs what is known as knuckle replacement surgery. During the procedure, the damaged knuckle is replaced with an artificial joint that acts as a flexible hinge.
Trapezium is a bone located in the wrist at the bottom of the thumb. If it becomes painful and makes it difficult to operate the hand in a normal way, the doctor may recommend a surgery during which the trapezium is removed. In most cases the scar tissue will naturally fill the gap after the trapezium removal, but sometimes the doctor can fills the space with tendon1.
