Opioid addiction is an increasingly concerning health crisis in the United States. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, in 2017 47,000 million people died due to opioid overdose, while approximately 1.7 million people continue to suffer from abuse and misuse of opioids, whether obtained illegally or through a prescription.
Treating opioid addiction is a priority for the Health Department. Thus, it has partnered with various research agencies and pharmaceutical companies to develop safe and innovative solutions. One of these solutions is a prescription medication called Suboxone, which received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002 to replace methadone, then the primary medication for opiate addicts.
